How to Migrate from Tokens to Dynamic Shortcodes
Updated over a week ago

With the release of version 3.0 of Dynamic Content for Elementor, the Tokens feature has been deprecated in favor of the more powerful and flexible Dynamic Shortcodes.

While the Token code will remain in the software and continue to function for existing implementations, we encourage users to transition to Dynamic Shortcodes.
Here's what you need to know about making the switch.

Continued Support for Tokens

Tokens are not being removed entirely from Dynamic Content for Elementor, which means that your existing Tokens will still function correctly. This ongoing support ensures that your current projects will not be disrupted and gives you time to plan and execute your migration to Dynamic Shortcodes when it's convenient for you.

I have created many sites with Tokens, I do not have the time to migrate. How do I do it?

If you find that migrating from Tokens to Dynamic Shortcodes across many sites is too daunting a task given your current schedule, consider adopting a gradual integration approach. Start using Dynamic Shortcodes for new additions or features and any future projects. This way, you can slowly phase out Tokens without needing to overhaul your existing sites immediately. Continue to maintain your current sites with Tokens and integrate Dynamic Shortcodes where feasible. This method minimizes disruption and allows you to familiarize yourself with the new system without urgent pressure.

No Automatic Migration

Please note that there is no automated process for converting Tokens to Dynamic Shortcodes. This transition requires a manual approach, primarily because Dynamic Shortcodes offer a broader range of capabilities and configurations that weren’t available with Tokens.

Do Tokens still function with Dynamic Shortcodes?

Yes, Tokens can function concurrently with Dynamic Shortcodes. You can utilize both Dynamic Shortcodes and Tokens simultaneously, although not within the same text area—such as an editor's settings panel. In such cases, you should ensure that all Tokens are replaced with Dynamic Shortcodes in one go.

Why Switch to Dynamic Shortcodes?

Dynamic Shortcodes surpass the functionality offered by Tokens, providing more robust and versatile solutions for your projects. For a detailed comparison and insights into why Dynamic Shortcodes represent a significant upgrade over Tokens, refer to our dedicated article on this topic.

Utilizing the Wizard for Dynamic Shortcodes

To aid in the transition, we offer a Wizard for Dynamic Shortcodes, similar to the one that was available for Tokens. This Wizard simplifies the process of creating Dynamic Shortcodes, especially for users who are less familiar with code or those who are new to Dynamic Content for Elementor. It guides you through creating shortcodes step by step, allowing you to integrate complex functionalities without needing deep technical knowledge.

Is there a tool to identify the Tokens I use on the site?

No tools are currently planned.

Deactivate Tokens

When you have finished the migration you can deactivate Tokens from Dynamic Content for Elementor > Features
